Community & Culture
The lodge is running a Conservation Lessons series at a nearby school in which they use ancestral Mapuche knowledge to teach the children about the importance of having a relationship with nature and wildlife. Vira Vira also has a local internship project which sees them accept applicants from the region rather than outside of Chile. You’ll be given information on all the projects the lodge supports and how you can get involved if you’d like to. The lodge employs 40 people from nearby communities.
Conservation
The community helps to grow saplings which the lodge then plants as part of its reforestation project. This provides them with an income, and it also helps spread awareness about deforestation and the need to work to stop it. You can buy trees that will be planted in the Mapuche community. The lodge team and locals also hold regular environmental clean ups to clear the river banks of washed up rubbish.
Footprint
The central heating at the lodge is completely generated by certified wood pellets. Grey water is treated in ecological treatment plants on site. All of the lodge’s lamps are filled with LED bulbs. Vira Vira meets the European insulation standards and all energy usage is tracked and reported on regularly. An on-site water bottling plant has helped to eliminate the use of plastic bottles, with only glass and aluminium bottles being used on excursions. Waste is recycled where possible, and organic waste is recycled for use in the gardens.
