Comuna do Ibitipoca

Overview

An inspiring project

Set in a 5000-hectare private reserve three hours inland from Rio, Ibitopoca is an inspiring project where sustainability, conservation, rewilding, luxury, culture and art all meet.

The Fazenda do Engenho sits at its heart, the original farmhouse dating back to 1715 that was restored using exclusively reclaimed materials and furnishings, maintaining the property’s original character. The eight rooms are individually designed and are decorated with local handicrafts. Sink into a Victorian-style claw-foot bath or wash away the tension in a relaxing rain shower. There are also restored village houses dotted around the estate.

Settle in at Comuna do Ibitipoca for delicious meals prepared in the traditional kitchen. Most of the staff come from local villages, and you can be assured of a warm welcome and fresh ingredients.

Outside, explore the property and you’ll discover a sculpture garden of huge steel figures created by Californian artist Karen Cusolito. Marvel at them as you enjoy freshly-squeezed juices and snacks. There are also thundering waterfalls and swimming holes to cool off in in the surrounding hills.

There are many wildlife species to discover in the reserve's restored Atlantic woodland, including the critically endangered Muriqui monkey currently being introduced into the area with help from the project, alongside dozens of other enigmatic mammal and bird species.
