Conservation
Las Torres are committed to preserving the magic of Torres del Paine National Park and its unexplored nature for future generations. They support a number of projects related to the park’s endemic wildlife, environmental education and reforestry. In Las Torres Reserve they are implementing all the most recommended and recognised best practices, with the aim to become a reference for nature conservation in the region.
Footprint
In 2013, the estancia took all its livestock from the area and is now looking at the holistic management of grazing areas to help capture carbon. The land is left without grazing animals for three to four months, encouraging higher plant growth rates with the topsoil able to sequester more carbon.
Hotel Las Torres operates the entire park’s waste management system. Previously, trash was collected and sent to landfill sites in nearby Puerto Natales. In 2018, some 300 tonnes a year were transported and dumped annually, or 1.7kg of rubbish for every night someone stayed in the park. After weighing and studying the waste, looking for ways to cut this down through different packaging and banning plastic bottles has seen the park’s waste footprint drop to 100 tones and 0.8kg per person. The target is 400 grammes per night within two years and net-zero waste within five years.
The ranch aims to lessen its food’s carbon footprint and maximise the freshness of produce with one of the largest organic gardens in southern Chile that is the source for around 60% of the fruits, vegetables and herbs used in the restaurant and staff canteen. Las Torres is also home to Pionero, a fun and pioneering cocktail bar with a focus on sustainability using recycled glassware and homegrown ingredients.
