Overview
An elevated experience
Kicheche Laikipia is an eco-award-winning comfortable and intimate tented camp nestled in the shadows of Mount Kenya, one of a handful of properties located in the 360km² Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
With only six tents, Kicheche Laikipia is a small camp offering comfort and quality. The communal area, set under canvas, includes an open-plan library, lounge and dining space decorated with African artwork and textiles. Comfortable sofas are positioned around a large open fireplace. Outside, you can relax on the deck with a drink or enjoy lunch alfresco beneath the shady trees.
The spacious tents offer a good level of comfort, without being overly luxurious, and have small touches which make your stay all the more comfortable. Each tent is set among bushes and trees for privacy, with outdoor seating and a hammock allowing you to lie back and enjoy your surroundings and watch animals come to drink. Inside is a large en-suite bathroom and dressing area, a small sitting area and twin or double beds. The comfort of the tents is matched by the friendliness of the staff who will look after your every need.

Experiences
-
Game drives
Game drives are available during the day and at night, using the lodge’s custom-built 4WD Land Cruiser! You can expect to see lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and oodles of plains game, in addition to rare species such as African wild dog, Grevy’s zebra, and Beisa oryx.
-
Bush walks
Walking safari in this particular area tends to be quite a gentle affair, a chance to get slightly more immersed in the bush and to learn about the finer points of flora and fauna. They must be booked in advance so the lodge has time to request a rifle from the rangers in the Conservancy.
-
Lion tracking
It is also possible to participate in the local lion monitoring program, in which a conservancy guide uses radio tracking equipment to locate the animals, after which you spend some time monitoring and recording their behaviour for the Ol Pejeta Ecological Monitoring Department database.
-
Chimpanzee Sanctuary
You can also take a trip to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, to see the orphaned chimps who are raised there and to learn about the difficulties faced by chimpanzees in the wild.
-
Endangered Species Boma and Baraka the Rhino
Over on the busy eastern side of the conservancy, the Endangered Species Boma is home to the last two northern white rhinos on the planet. A two hour guided tour shows you around and explains what is being done to try to bring this species back from beyond the brink. The boma also has six southern white rhinos and two black rhinos, plus numerous Grevy’s zebras and Jackson’s hartebeests. There is also the chance to meet Baraka, a blind rhino that is kept in the sanctuary for his own safety and who can be approached very close from a feeding platform.
Community & Culture
The Kicheche Community Trust, which was set up in 2004, funds various projects in the nearby communities. The aim is to encourage people to preserve the environment while also improving their own welfare. Projects focus on improving health and education facilities.
Conservation
Kicheche organises environmental projects such as Clean Up campaigns in towns along the edge of the conservancies, raising money for cattle bomas (grazing areas) to reduce deforestation, assisting with tree planting and the running of a bee hive program. On the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the fees from activities at Kicheche Laikipia to the endangered animal enclosure and the back of house chimpanzee sanctuary visit go to the projects themselves, and so contributing to their operations.
Footprint
Kicheche itself as of 2018 has won the gold eco-award for all of its camps four years in a row, following their solar energy, upcycling and composting practises.
