Overview
Community led conservation
Established together with the local community, Sasaab is set in an expansive wildlife-rich conservancy where Samburu culture and traditions are thriving. Families here directly from your stay, and most of the staff here live nearby, so they are the ideal people to welcome you and show you around their home.
The lodge has strong elements of Moroccan design in its architecture, specifically taking the African heat into consideration. The nine rooms are spacious and boast large open-air bathrooms and private plunge pools. Relax on your veranda and admire the views across the plateau towards the impressive peak of Mount Kenya. Because it is set on the river it’s the ideal place to watch the bathing herds of elephants. To unwind after a day out in the bush, book an organic treatment at the award-winning spa, or tuck into a wood-fired pizza out at the main pool.
From elephants and lions, to leopards and cheetahs, the area boasts wonderful natural diversity. You’ll also find the 'Samburu Special Five': Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, gerenuk antelopes and Somali ostriches.

Community & Culture
A portion of your stay goes directly to projects that Sasaab works on with the Westgate Community Conservancy which is home to about 600 Samburu families. Some of the projects include health clinics and education which allow the community to thrive alongside the animals. There is also a Conservation Scholars Programme which allows 24 local students to attend secondary school, and a lunch programme at nine nearby schools which feeds over 1110 children a day.
Conservation
The lodge helps to protect its section of the Westgate Conservancy. They also have strong links with the Grevy’s Zebra Trust which is just a short drive away. You’re able to visit and participate in some of their activities.
Footprint
Sasaab is one of the few Gold eco-rated properties in Kenya and they are fully committed to operating sustainably and in an environmentally friendly way. All of the power and hot water are provided by solar panels.
