Community & Culture
There are a variety of cultural tours on offer at the lodge, including getting to experience estancia or ranch life first hand, learning about Magellanic customs and traditions, enjoying a Patagonian ‘asado’ (barbecue), or riding on horseback with the gauchos. You’ll also find Patagonia culture celebrated in the hotel’s design, from handicrafts and artifacts, to dioramas created by Chilean artist Matilde Huidobro which look at what life was like in the days of the first settlers and explorers Sarmiento de Gamboa, Hernando de Magallanes, and Charles Darwin.
Conservation
To manage environmental impact during construction, landscape artists Catalina Phillips and Gerardo Ariztía removed the vegetation on site and ensured it was cared for in a greenhouse before replanting it around the hotel once building was complete. As a result of keeping that native vegetation, the property is often visited by guanacos, ñandús, native birds and foxes. They also built a pathway so that you can wander down to Lake Sarmiento with its ancient limestone thrombolites without disturbing the vegetation on the way.
Footprint
This eco-lodge is known for its innovative architecture that blends into the surrounding landscape. The lodge’s conservation efforts and focus on minimising its footprint has benefitted the area. Tierra Patagonia uses LED lighting and is constantly looking at introducing new renewable energy projects. They plan to establish a kitchen garden.
