Community & Culture
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens is part of the Boena Wilderness Lodges who believe responsible tourism should benefit local communities and take great strides to ensure it happens. Tourism is the primary source of income for the residents of Tortuguero and its neighbor San Francisco. And no one knows and loves this area more than the people that live here.
All of the lodge’s staff are local, and their love for their home is reflected in the genuinely friendly and personalized service they provide. To support their development, they offer regular training opportunities so they can learn new skills and grow professionally.
They also partake in community outreach, such as supporting the local recycling initiative and developing educative curricula that strengthen environmental awareness among our youth and school children. One such program is a Tortuga Lodge & Gardens sponsored visit to Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge, where students learn about protecting local resources and putting sustainability into action. The lodge has also helped upgrade school infrastructure.
Boena strives to preserve and celebrate the history and culture of the regions where they operate. The lodge itself was restored to showcase the local heritage, with rooms named after renowned residents from the area.
In addition, Tortuga Lodge & Gardens is a proud sponsor of the local Caribbean School of Music. Through monthly donations, over thirty children have the opportunity to learn about Caribbean-style music and are encouraged to spread culture and art in Tortuguero and San Francisco.
Footprint
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens embraces a number of sustainability practices. These include sourcing over half the lodge’s energy needs from solar panels and biodigesters to create the methane gas used by the kitchen to prepare staff meals. Drinking water is purified with a high-tech system of filters and ultraviolet light, eliminating the use of bottled water (in fact no single-use plastics here), numerous water-saving measures have been implemented and greywater is treated in special tanks.
