Overview
Bhutan’s first contemporary concept hotel
Retreat from the hustle and bustle of Thimphu to Zhiwa Ling Ascent, located just outside the city centre, relax amongst the pristine natural environment with panoramic views.
Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital and largest city, is situated in the west-central part of the country on the Raidak River. Framed by the majestic Himalayas and cloaked in myth, Bhutan’s colourful capital is as much a feast for the senses as it is for the stomach. Though only minutes from Thimphu city, Zhiwa Ling Ascent feels a world away. The 25-acre property borders the Motithang Takin Preserve - a wildlife reserve area for takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Experience peace and quiet like you’ve not experienced before.
Zhiwa Ling Ascent has been designed following the style of Bhutanese dzong and farmhouse architecture, while embedding strong ecological principles throughout. From the double-glazed windows built to capture the sun, to the innovative collection of rainwater from the roof and the generation of hot water by way of solar panels – the hotel has been developed to be totally energy efficient. Stay in one of the 17 Deluxe rooms, each elevated to ensure views of the mountains and surrounding cypress trees. Or choose one of the three Premium rooms, each with its own unique view - the hotel grounds, local temples and surrounding mountains. The restaurant provides a vibrant dining experience offering fresh, organic vegetables from its garden, in a contemporary setting.

Phajoding hike
Phajoding (3,650 m / 12,045 ft) takes its name from the saint Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, who is believed to have meditated there in the 13th century and is considered to be one of the most sacred meditational sites in Bhutan. About ten minutes’ drive from Zhiwa Ling Ascent to the start point (or drive further up to BBS Tower), the trek to Phajoding is an uphill climb with 3 hours hiking distance through forested area of blue pine, fir and spruce.
Community & Culture
Tourism and hospitality students at The Royal Institute for Tourism and Hospitality receive hands-on training of 120 hours each per year at Zhiwa Ling Ascent. They learn valuable skills from making room reservations to check-in and check-out, and culinary arts - including wine service - to spa therapy. Like its sister property, Zhiwa Ling Heritage, Zhiwa Ling Ascent is committed to developing an all-Bhutanese team and strives for excellence in hotel service. Through your support, students strengthen core skills, grow in confidence and deepen their awareness of Bhutanese hospitality.
