Zanzibar Archipelago
Unguja, Pemba and Mafia
Surrounded by warm Indian Ocean waters off the east coast of Tanzania, the Zanzibar Archipelago's beautiful string of palm-fringed islands have attracted visitors from around the world for centuries.
Unguja – colloquially referred to as Zanzibar – Pemba, Mafia and dozens of other smaller isles make up the archipelago, collectively known as the ‘Spice Islands’ after the cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and pepper grown here that scent the air.
Stunning beaches are the main draw for a Zanzibar luxury holiday, the perfect place to unwind after a safari, but for the adventurous, there is much more to discover. Immerse yourself in Stone Town’s blend of African, Arab, Indian and European influences, dive on iridescent coral reefs, try your hand at windsurfing or cruise the waters between islets on a dhow sailing boat.
Our favourite lodges here are making a palpable impact on people and place, from private islands in the middle of their very own marine reserves to rustic retreats that strive to share the benefits with the local community.
