Days 1 — 3
Colourful Valparaíso
On arrival in Chile’s capital, Santiago, you’ll be met and driven a short distance to the charmingly extrovert port of Valparaíso for two nights in Pablo Neruda’s favourite city. Though still an important trade hub, its heyday was between the Californian Gold Rush and Panama Canal’s construction, when it was a stop off for ships on their way to the United States’ West Coast, and most of its UNESCO protected historic quarter dates from then.
Brightly painted Victorian buildings sit atop dozens of hills surrounding the bay, linked by a maze of cobbled streets, stairways and funicular lifts. And, with thriving street art and creative scenes, it is no museum, which you’ll discover on privately guided tours.
Days 3 — 6
Atacama adventure
Fly north from Santiago to the Atacama Desert. This is a harsh and beautiful region, one of the driest places on earth with its high-altitude Martian looking landscape backdropped by snowcapped volcanoes whose peaks reach close to 6,000m.
Amid this, find the oasis town of San Pedro, and your luxury lodge. From your comfortable base, head out on drives, hikes, horse rides and bike trails to explore steaming geysers, flamingo-frequented lagoons, surreal canyons, towering dunes and rustic pueblos. Thanks to a rare cloud cover, altitude and lack of light pollution, the stargazing here is some of the best anywhere on earth.
Days 6 — 8
Renowned vineyards
Fly back to the capital and drive out to a celebrated winery in one of the fertile valleys a short way outside the city. With an ideal climate somewhere between that of California and France, this is one of the world’s most productive wine regions growing a mix of distinct Carménère, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.
Staying at a traditional casona on a vineyard embracing biodynamic methods or a chic architectural masterpiece overlooking a striking modern winery, enjoy your days indulging in the local produce and fabulous cuisine.
Days 8 — 12
Explore Torres del Paine
And now for the grand finale. Fly south, deep into Patagonia, to Torres del Paine National Park. It’s here that the Andes are at their most spectacular, rising out of bright blue fjords and turquoise lakes through green pampas and immense glaciers to jagged granite summits.
Adventure abounds in Patagonia. The hiking here is a highlight, with a number of half and full-day expeditions rewarded with unforgettable views. There are also mountain bike trails, horse rides with local gauchos, kayaking trips on glacial lakes, excursions to learn about the indigenous Aonikenk culture and, for the very lucky, a chance to spot pumas in the wild. Return to your beautiful lodge each evening for amazing views and hearty Chilean cuisine.
