Days 1 — 2
Breakfast with giraffes
Begin your discovery of Kenya with a night in a green suburb in Nairobi at the iconic Giraffe Manor, a 1930s mansion set amid a woodland reserve that wouldn’t look out of place in an English shire.
Its most famous residents are a herd of friendly Rothschild’s giraffes who wander up to the windows in search of treats. A breakfast shared with these incredible animals is one of the safari world’s most unforgettable experiences.
Days 2 — 4
Maasai culture and Mount Kilimanjaro Views
Your first safari lodge is the handsome Ol Donyo, set amid rolling green hills in a 1,100 square kilometer Maasai-owned ranch wedged between Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks. It’s a model of collaborative conservation, protecting wildlife such as lions, cheetahs and the iconic bull elephants that are some of the last big tuskers in Africa while providing income for the community.
Guides from the local community show you around their village as well as leading walking safaris, game drives and mountain bike rides. Exploring the conservancy on horseback is an unforgettable experience. All before returning to the lodge for Relais & Châteaux dining, views from your suite across the plunge pool to Mount Kilimanjaro and nights under the stars.
Days 4 — 7
Luxury meets sustainability at Segera
What was once some 20,000 hectares of overgrazed ranchland in Laikipia that struggled to support the surrounding communities and wildlife has been transformed thanks to Segera’s pioneering community-first conservation ethos. Today elephants, lions, buffalos and elands roam free alongside endangered Grevy’s zebras, giraffes, patas monkeyss and African wild dogs.
Opened more as a showcase of its successes and techniques (though it still happens to be one of Kenya’s most luxurious properties), it can be a hands-on experience of planting trees, rangers on patrol and learning all about the work here as much as it is about game drives, walking safaris and indulging at the spa.
Days 7 — 10
Maasai Mara safari
And now for a safari in one of Africa’s most important conservation and wilderness areas. The instantly recognisable Maasai Mara hosts an astounding diversity and density of wildlife year-round, especially lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants.
Between July and October, millions of wildebeest and zebra cross from the Serengeti in Tanzania to create an awe-inspiring natural spectacle. From your vintage tented safari camp set in its very own private conservancy bordering the national reserve, head out on action-packed game drives and nature walks, enjoy romantic meals out in the wilderness, swim in a waterfall and even a canvas bath in the bush. All in the original spirit and romantic essence of a real safari.
