Days 1 — 3
Gateway to the Amazon
The city of Manaus sits on the confluence of the Rio Negro and Amazon River, surrounded on all sides by rainforest. Once a colonial fort, thanks to the rubber boom in the late 1800s it became the richest city in South America, drawing wealthy families from Europe who brought their art, architecture and culture with them, the grandest example being the ornate Amazon Theatre opera house. A guide will introduce you to the city, its architecture and cuisine, including an obligatory caipirinha or two.
Days 3 — 7
Immersed in the Rainforest
Take a light aircraft upriver, getting some appreciation for the Amazon’s immensity, before hopping aboard a boat to your eco-lodge inside the Mamiraua Reserve, Brazil’s largest protected area. Floating on a lagoon, Uakari is a simple but comfortable place that is all about exploring the surroundings.
Head out by day and night on canoes and motorboats through swamps and flooded forests on the search for white uakari – a locally endemic monkey with a distinct red face and white fur – sloths, black-headed squirrel monkey, both grey and pink river dolphins and some spectacular birdlife. If the water levels are low enough, hiking is possible too. You will also meet a riverine community, learning about local people life, and see lectures given by the naturalist guide and the researchers.
Days 7 — 8
Overnight in Manaus
Spend a relaxing evening back in Manaus before your flight to Rio de Janeiro the following morning.
Days 8 — 11
Revel in Rio
Between vibrant beaches and verdant hills, all overlooked by the open arms of Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Staying in a hotel right on Leblon’s beach, a private guide will show you how Rio’s cuisine reflects the city’s fusion of cultures on a flavoursome foodie tour, take you around the city’s scenic highlights, and to a youth samba school to learn about the vibrant world of carnival. You’ll also have plenty of free time to explore cosmopolitan Leblon’s lively bars and restaurants at your own pace.
Days 11 — 14
Chill in Trancoso
Bounded by thick jungle on three sides and the Atlantic on the fourth, Trancoso was an isolated fishing village for centuries before its 'discovery’ by hippies and artists in the 1970s. Since then, it has remained quietly cool, becoming a little chicer while retaining its eco credentials with its beautiful reef-sheltered beach and colourful quadrado old town remaining blissfully untouched by big developers.
You’ll be staying at UXUA, an exclusive yet laid back collection of private casas and a sumptuous spa. The cuisine is a celebration of local produce and Bahia’s indigenous, African and European heritage and the beach bar is a short walk away, with surfing, sea kayaking and horse riding for those feeling active.
