Days 1 — 2
Buenos Aires culture and cuisine
There’s no better introduction to Argentina than Buenos Aires. Take in handsome neoclassical and art nouveau architecture along tree-lined avenues under glass-clad skyscrapers, cobbled side streets, historic parks and buzzing nightlife. Its mixture of distinct neighbourhoods reflect its past as a country of immigrants – mostly from Spain and Italy but also from across Europe and the Middle East – that has resulted in something unique.
You’ll be staying in a charming boutique hotel, and we’ve included a delectable culinary tour to discover the city through its flavours with your private guide. For those who want to delve into the capital more, we can extend your stay here with experiences tailored to you.
Days 3 — 6
Iberá safari
Fly to the northeast of the country and drive on to Rincón del Socorro, a beautiful estancia sitting in its own 12,000-hectare reserve on the southeastern edge of the Iberá Wetlands. Formerly a cattle ranch, it – along with 140,000 additional acres – was purchased by the Doug and Kris Tompkins’ Conservation Land Trust (CLT) with the mission of restoring habitat and biodiversity supported by ecotourism. In 2015, this was donated to the Argentine government, creating the largest national park in the country.
Today, the landscape is a rich tapestry of lagoons, marshes, plains and forests home to an astonishing array of wildlife such as capybaras, marsh deer, black howler monkeys, rheas and maned wolves, and also offers some amazing birdwatching. Thanks to the work of CLT at Socorro, locally extinct giant anteaters, pampas deer, collared peccaries and, most recently, jaguars have been reintroduced. Learn about this pioneering rewilding work as you explore on game drives, night safaris, walks, kayak and boat trips, horse rides and cultural experiences.
Days 6 — 8
Wetland wildlife
Drive north skirting the national park to your next stop, Puerto Valle, a charming 1868 ranch with views across a wide section of the Paraná River looking to Paraguay. Enjoy more opportunities to spot the Iberá’s wildlife on drives, bike rides and from horseback.
Kayaking and boat trips on the river and Laguna Valle are a real highlight here, as is the birdlife, which includes the reintroduced red macaw. For an insight into the area’s history, visit the nearby ruins of San Ignacio Miní, a 17th-century Jesuit mission complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Days 8 — 10
Iguazú Falls
Continue upriver by road to the Brazilian border. Here, cutting through the rainforest before its confluence with the Paraná, is one of the natural world’s most awe-inspiring sites – Iguazú Falls. Meaning ‘big river’ in the local Guaraní language, some 250 individual falls and cataracts make this the largest waterfall system on earth.
From your luxe jungle villa at Awasi, enjoy tours of the falls and beyond on an enthralling range of excursions with your own private guide, learning about the incredible biodiversity of the Atlantic rainforest and the region’s indigenous culture.
